What will you learn?

Doctor of Public Health programme is an advanced professional degree for those who wish to be leaders in the practice of public health. It is for those who intend to lead health organisation in the public and private health sectors, and also in teaching and research organisations. It is oriented towards applied research in public health. Each candidate opting for this advanced (doctorate) degree will continue in one of the public health specialties offered: -

Family Health

Environmental Health

Occupational Medicine

Epidemiology in Health

Biomedical Statistics

The programme of study comprises two parts (Part 1 and Part 2).  Part 1 consists of courses including an internship course and Part 2 consists of research that leads to a thesis. Except where prior written approval has been obtained from the Dean of the Faculty, a candidate must successfully complete Part 1 before embarking on Part 2.

 

Eligibility:

Applicants for the PhD programme at the University of Malaya must satisfy the following requirements: 

  1. A master’s degree by way of research; or
  2. A master’s degree by coursework or  by mixed mode with CGPA of not less than 3.7; or
  3. A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between  2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree with CGPA not less than 3.0; or
  4. A master’s degree by coursework or by mixed mode with CGPA between  2.0 and 3.69 and an undergraduate degree  with CGPA between  2.5 and 2.99, and one (1) of the following criteria:
    1. relevant work experience;
    2. publication in the relevant field;
    3. applicant is a scholarship holder;
    4. applicant is a University of Malaya graduate.
  5. Applicants with a Bachelor’s Degree with CGPA of not less than 3.7 may be admitted to the PhD Programme.  These candidates are required to defend their candidature in a research progress seminar to be held on a date two (2) semesters from the initial registration date; failing which the candidature may be converted to the relevant Master’s degree.

English Language Requirement for Non-Malaysian
TOEFL – score 550; or
IELTS (Academic) – band 6.00; or

Pass English Language course offered by University of Malaya (UMCCed) ; or

Who possesses a degree or degrees from a university or an institution of higher education where the medium of instruction is in English language.
